Dr. Paul Simon is the Chief Science Officer and Director of the Division of Assessment, Planning, and Quality at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. He is board certified in pediatrics and preventive medicine. He completed a two-year fellowship in field epidemiology with the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS Program) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1992 and then served as a Medical Epidemiologist in CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, assigned to the Los Angeles County HIV Epidemiology Program from 1992-1998. He joined the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health in 1998 as the Director of the Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology and then served as the Director of the Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention. In his current position, he oversees the Department’s Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology, Office of Planning, Evaluation and Development, and Office of Quality Improvement and Accreditation.  In his role as Chief Science Officer, he leads the Department’s efforts to integrate science into public health practice.  He and his staff support efforts across the Department in the areas of evidence-based practice, program evaluation, public health surveillance, population health assessment, economic evaluation, health impact assessment, and other special studies.
